I had the same problem, then i made the following changes:
1) Go to File, 2) Project tab, 3) Information button, 4) select your Current Date, 5) and Status Date.

That sorts out the problems i had, escpecially when i back dated a project.
If anyone else comes up with a way just let me know al well, still learning :-)

Thanks for the note.... the "Critical Path" algorithm works according to the PMBOK and standard project management rules.  If you do update a project and tasks there are times they will be rescheduled.  You can look at the documentation for more details.

Hi, I'm just starting a project plan and have literally only added one line with a sub line. Does anyone know how I can amend the finish date as it just reverts back everytime I try and change it.

The default is to finish as early as possible.  If you drag the bar graphically it will put a constraint in.... or if you open the task detail view you can change the constraint to "Must Finish On" and put a date in.....
